It's fitting that my first family photography blog post begins with my dear friend Shelly. Shelly was a college friend who is tragically no longer with us. I think of her, and am fed by her strength daily. I held a session with her family in Seattle during a brief break in her chemotherapy regimen. At Kenyon College, Shelly was a fierce source of joy & laughter. So, it was no surprise that during our session, I witnessed love and laughter beyond what I'd ever seen. She physically GLOWED when her children were around, and you could tell she adored every single cell in their bodies, and every utterance they made.
I just completed a day long Desire Map workshop with the remarkable Lizanne Corbit. During the workshop, Lizanne read this passage from Danielle LaPorte's The Desire Map book - it reminded me of Shelly's passion for her family and for surviving every second she could.
Shelly - you continue to live through me. May I be blessed by the company of your stunning spirit.

Devote yourself to done.
There are Soul-justified reasons to cancel. There are times to just stop.
This isn’t one of them. Keep going. Show up. Full on. Full tilt. Full out. Decide to

Why decide to rise?

In fact, these are the reasons that will make you sick and tired:
Do not rise out of obligation.
Do not rise because of feared consequences.
Do not rise because you think being tough
makes you smarter (it doesn’t).
Decide to rise because you want to expand — your being, your life, your possibilities.
Decide to rise because superpowers are meant to be activated and applied in
